The LORD is my banner..
Moses built an altar and named it The LORD is My Banner
After Joshua defeated the Amalekites, Moses built an altar as a memorial – a holy remembrance of the greatness of the LORD. Victory had already been established and now it was set in stone for all to see.
In the Old Testament, whenever a banner was raised (usually in battle), it meant – both literally and figuratively that there was a victory. So Moses was literally telling everyone that Jesus was his victory. He was “raising the flag” for all to see that it was the Lord alone Who had won a great victory there.
Praise the LORD, you his angels,
you mighty ones who do his bidding,
who obey his word.
Praise the LORD, all his heavenly hosts,
you his servants who do his will.
Praise the LORD, all his works
everywhere in his dominion.
Praise the LORD, my soul.
The call to praise the LORD throughout the earth is very important. It has been overlooked for too long by our leaders here in the church. David is showing us here how to take authority over our dominion on the earth and charging all created beings to praise the LORD. He is also charging all created works –plants, trees, animals, etc. – to praise the LORD.
When we praise Jesus, we are calling out for the power of His name to be applied to that situation. We are establishing Him here. We are raising the banner of His name over that circumstance. It’s important to continue to reinforce the idea of praising the Lord in our minds, our hearts and on our lips.
Go through the gates!
Prepare the way for the people;
Build up the highway!
Take out the stones,
Lift up a banner for the peoples!
Indeed the LORD has proclaimed
To the end of the world:
“Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Surely your salvation is coming;
Behold, His reward is with Him,
And His work before Him.’”
And they shall call them The Holy People,
The Redeemed of the LORD;
And you shall be called Sought Out,
A City Not Forsaken.
We are to lift up the banner of the name of Jesus here on earth. Every time we say His name in exaltation, we are lifting His name high as a banner for all to see in the spiritual realm. This accomplishes two things:
1. It establishes Jesus among the angels and the demons along the spiritual highway. Jesus is the banner – the signpost - raised up along the way for all to see. Our victory is certain as we raise the banner of His name by exalting the Most High God. ‘Most High’ means you can’t go any higher. We have invoked the highest and greatest and that name is JESUS. It is because of what He did in conquering death, disease, the devil and the flesh. That is how we are able to take on the name of Jesus Christ and raise it as our standard of arms.
2. The second thing that speaking the name of Jesus in exaltation accomplishes is that it establishes the way for us. It results in the Light everlasting for us. It makes our path all the brighter. Because His banner is over us, His light illuminates our way. Our path is much clearer because we are in perfect alignment.
Because it is His light that makes us what we are, we are in Him - under His protective care. No matter how bad our past was, we are to be called redeemed. We are to be called holy. We are to be called sought out and not forsaken. Because He is exalted, we are too.
Continually speak the name of Jesus in praise out loud. We are raising the banner of His name in victory in the spiritual realm and establishing our pathway here on earth.
