Emmanuel-God is with us
A love letter from our Father handed down through history
For thousands of years, it was just the words of the prophets. Those promising, hopeful words went out into the air and then..they seemed to disappear. That is what faith is for, some might say. Yet, year after year it seemed there was nothing but silence. Where was God? Where was this plan that Isaiah spoke of in chapter 7, verse 14: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”. Immanuel means God is with us. There had been rumblings that it’s a messianic name referring to the Messiah. No one knew for sure when this would happen though. There was seemingly only silence.
This is not unlike the environment we face right now, is it?
People ask daily:
“Where is your God now?”
“Is there really a loving God out there?”
“Why is Jesus silent?”
“Where is my answer?”
An angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).
God has a funny way of doing things. He chooses the least-likely way. Yet, THIS is our God. He chooses the foolish ways. It’s pretty inauspicious. The most important time in the history of mankind came to simple unmarried teenagers. In fact, God had to send an angel in a dream to talk Joseph into marrying the girl because of the scandal it was going to cause. Even in the greatest miracle, it wasn't going to be easy. It was going to take great faith and fortitude to parent this God-child. There is no textbook for something like that! How does one announce the Savior of all mankind? Why, He begins with some shepherds in a field at night! This is why our expectations of how things "should" be done must never get in the way of a GREAT BIG GOD. He does things the way that is best and that is most relatable.
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Jesus was born humbly into this world but fully conquered it. In every aspect, the world was conquered by what Jesus did. Jesus overcame in life and He overcame in death. He did it all. Since Jesus is the Word of God, made flesh, then the Word conquered as well. The Word died and rose, the Word conquered hell and sickness.
If the Word is Jesus, it is the Spirit in us that carries the Word where it is to go. True love is proof of God. The Word is permanently established, fixed, in the Spirit and in the world. The Word cannot be overcome anymore, just as Jesus cannot be overcome anymore. He already did everything. There is nothing more to do. Once it becomes established, nothing can change it. It is permanent and it is powerful!
This is what is meant by “Immanuel - God is with us”. The permanent, immortal Word and Spirit are both living inside of His children at all times. There was a great message in that prophecy and we are the living proof that it came true. We are the living containers of His power.
1 Corinthians 3:16-17
Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you? If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him; for God's temple is sacred, and you are that temple.
We are now the containers and the carriers of the Holy Spirit of God – the complete fulfillment of the ‘Immanuel – God is with us’ prophecy. He is always with us. He can go anywhere that we go and He is always represented by us. Just like Jesus, we are now His temple – moving, walking representations of His Spirit. We are the mobile church of God because of the Spirit.
We are the sacred temple of the Holy Spirit. The very fact that we contain the Holy Spirit in us proves what Jesus did on the cross. The Spirit in us proves Jesus true. If we weren’t found clean by God, He would never allow His presence to be put into us. In the Old Covenant there was always a separation but now there is no separation between God and us. It proves that the blood has forever cleansed us.
After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him,
When we are baptized by water we are washed by the Word – Jesus. All worldliness is overcome. Spirit baptism is washed by the truth – the Holy Spirit. All spiritualness is overcome. This is the completeness of the New Covenant.
When Jesus came up out of the water at His baptism, He was joining the past creation with the New Creation. The Holy Spirit need not hover any longer. He can alight on the Word. It was an important symbol of the power of the New Covenant coming together for all believers. Soon the children of God would also experience the same joining together of the Word and the Spirit. The Holy Spirit would alight in the same way on all believers who possess the Word and the truth.
Jesus came up out of the water at His baptism, joining the Spirit together with Himself. In doing so, the separation at creation between the Spirit “fluttering” over the “face” (of Jesus) in the waters was joined together, sealing the New Covenant. He came up and out of the water, signifying cleansing from the law. The Holy Spirit came down from hovering and indwelt, representing the bloodline of the new inheritance.
The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him—
the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and of power,
the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD
Isaiah tells us that these 7 attributes will "rest on" Jesus when the Holy Spirit comes upon Him. Isaiah foretold that Jesus would operate in each of these here on earth. Of course, we know that Isaiah's prophecy did hold true. These attributes of the Holy Spirit are all hallmarks of Jesus' ministry and of what we know of His personality. He moved and lived in all of these things because of the Holy Spirit.
Now that we have been given the Holy Spirit, we operate in the same seven Spirits. The Holy Spirit brings all of these things to this world through His children. These are the seven Spirits in which we are to operate:
- The Spirit of the Lord – Jesus rests upon His people
- The Spirit gives us wisdom
- The Spirit gives us understanding
- The Spirit gives us direction
- The Spirit gives us power
- The Spirit gives us knowledge
- The Spirit gives us reverence for the Lord
These are the same seven Spirits from Revelation:
John to the seven churches that are in Asia: Grace to you and peace, from Him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne
All of these attributes are imparted to the world through Christians because of the Holy Spirit bringing it through us and out of us. We have peace because we know that Immanuel: God is with us. If we have any insight, knowledge, understanding, wisdom, power or reverence, it all comes from the Holy Spirit in us. Like a fire, it ignites in us and catches on to other people.
Devise your strategy, but it will be thwarted; propose your plan, but it will not stand, for God is with us.
The Holy Spirit will protect believers in the end times. He will give us divine discernment, revelation, wisdom, interpretation, spiritual vision and inspiration. Because of the seven Spirits we will have what we need inside of us at all times. Even in great darkness, because of the Holy Spirit we will see clearly and know the truth at all times.
Because we serve such a loving Father, He sent His Son with a perfect plan and a perfect name: Immanuel, God is with us. He loves us so much that He left no doubt for us! Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you. (Psalm 9:10 NIV) Never again will we be separated from Him. Never will He forsake us. It is because He is now with us always!
