The night the Savior came into this world was just another night, not unlike tonight. There were ordinary shepherds out on the hills, doing ordinary jobs, in a mundane place. No one expected anything earth-shattering to happen there and yet, this is how God works:
And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. Luke 2:9-10
Whenever we see the word, “Behold” in the Bible, God is telling us to look and see in both the physical and the spiritual realm. It is a grace word because it brings the double blessing of giving us both supernatural insight into the physical world and the spiritual side.
So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked;
The reason that mankind fell into sin is that man looked at the tree and saw that it was good for food. The issue was that they only looked with their physical eyes and couldn’t see the spiritual danger. That is the reason that God told them not to eat from the tree. Once they did eat from the tree, their spiritual eyes were opened as well as their physical eyes.
Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, to know good and evil. And now, lest he put out his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever”— therefore the Lord God sent him out of the garden of Eden
Now that Adam had eaten from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, he had become just like one of the Trinity. That is why he was referred to as “the old Adam” in the New Testament”. The Lord God had to be sure that he didn’t eat from the tree of life so he put him out of the garden.
When they spoke amongst themselves, they used the word, Behold. However, the word Behold was never used in the entire exchange between Adam and the Lord. That is because Behold is a spiritual word and Adam and Eve were operating in a purely physical realm.
Besides, God had another plan that would involve the word, Behold and eternal life.
And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus.
Mary was a teenager. She had to have great understanding to accept this message. She had to look and see in both the physical and the spiritual. Behold is a grace word because it brings the double blessing.
When the angel Gabriel began his message to Mary, the very first thing that he said to her was, Behold. This set the stage for the New Covenant, the new plan and the new life in Jesus.
Using that word was not a coincidence. It was strategic. It was bringing Genesis 3 full circle.
Luke 9:16-17 (Phillips)
Then he took the five loaves and the two fish and looked up to Heaven, blessed them, broke them into pieces and passed them to his disciples to serve to the crowds. Everybody ate and was satisfied. Afterwards they collected twelve baskets full of broken pieces which were left over.
Here it is in action. Jesus is our perfect model. If we ever need to know how to act or live or react, we only need to turn to the life of Jesus.
Do we want to live in power and victory? Do what Jesus does. In the passage above, Jesus takes the meager helping but where does he look? He looks up to Heaven. We never look at the lack or failure. We look up into Heaven. We Behold.
Our mandate in the New Covenant is to be like Jesus, not Eve. Eve looked at the physical only. It looked good so she ate it. It only brought grief and destruction. Jesus looked at the spiritual first and it brought great victory and joy, not only to Him and His loved ones but to many, many people.
It is my prayer that you and your family have the most blessed and joyous Christmas this year!
