We have learned about the dunamis power - the miraculous force of God's power at work through the Holy Spirit. Now is the time to learn about the opposite of dunamis power: the weakened, corrupted power of the devil.
14 “You were the anointed cherub who [g]covers,
And I placed you there.
You were on the holy mountain of God;
You walked in the midst of the stones of fire.
15 “You were blameless in your ways
From the day you were created
Until unrighteousness was found in you.
[g]Ezekiel 28:14 Or guards
All power in heaven and earth came from God. We tend to think that there is God’s power and that there is the devil’s power and that they came from separate places. No, it all came from God. There is only one power in heaven and on earth and that is God’s power. God gave the devil limited power as a created being – as one of His angels. When he was cast out of heaven, the devil was the “anointed cherub”. He was a created being - beautiful, entrusted with guarding the most holy sites and blameless in his ways.
We know that the devil had power. He was given the honor of protecting the things of God. Yet the devil chose to use that power for his own gain. This is why there is a tiny grain of truth in all false things. God’s power and truth are so strong that they can’t be nullified even by false beliefs. Where do the psychics, the mediums, the Buddhists, the Hindus, etc. get their power from? It is a corrupted form of the same power. If the Holy Spirit is not involved, it is the same power that the devil was left with.
Why would we want to be a part of anything that has a grain or two of truth when we can have the full meal with the Holy Spirit, the ultimate bearer of truth?
16 “By the abundance of your trade
[h]You were internally filled with violence,
And you sinned;
Therefore I have cast you as profane
From the mountain of God.
And I have destroyed you, O [i]covering cherub,
From the midst of the stones of fire.
[i]Ezekiel 28:16 Or guardian
The power of the devil became corrupted when unrighteousness was found in him. He was cast out as profane and destroyed. Even his beauty was taken away as the Bible says later, (in verse 19), that people were appalled to look at him. He was no longer pure or of God. He still had power but was impossible to be used for good in the way that it was created to be.
Here is a very important point though: The devil’s power did not become greater. It doesn’t increase. Deception increases. The devil has always been able to lie his way into leverage against the children of the world and the children of God.
1 Corinthians 15:56
The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law;
Of course, we know that the devil brought the sting of death through the sin of Adam. He didn’t use much power – just enough to show up in the form of a serpent. The strength of the devil was to use deception. That is how we were introduced to death and sin.
The power of sin is the law. Sin becomes empowered by the law because no one can keep the law. So it becomes the opposite of what it was intended to do. There is only one antidote to sin and that is the dunamis (miraculous power) of grace.
Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil
If the devil is trying to tell us that he is more powerful, that is a lie. He is trying to deceive us by using God’s own power against us. We have more of God’s power available to us in our little finger than the devil could dream of but we have to know and understand that it is the power that Jesus won on the cross and not our own power.
The devil had the power of death and sin but he has been rendered powerless by Jesus. The dunamis power of the resurrection was so great that all of it was crushed and broken. The devil can never regain his power over sin and death now that the power of grace has been released. There is no more power in sin and death. We don’t have to fight it. Our faith and His dunamis power - along with the Holy Spirit - take us to the place of victory and keep us there.
So we must remember that the power that we have available to us is the same – it came from the same place – however the results are very different. It is like saying your power came from the powerful, hydro-electric Hoover Dam. It depends on how you are plugged in to your power source whether you are lighting a simple lamp or an entire city.
We have the dunamis power of Jesus, delivered by the Holy Spirit working through us. We have been given dominion here. We have the authority to turn the dunamis power off or turn it on in our lives. We control the power source. If it is on, the dunamis power can flow freely and the Holy Spirit can move at will. That is the perfect place to be!
May the Holy Spirit move and flow freely in you as you minister to others wherever you are on this earth. I pray the dunamis power and the blessing of the Holy Spirit on each of you today. He has big things planned for you! ~Anne
